Getting There:

We can't emphasize it enough. Get your iPod and Patience Meter charged. For the duration, Illinois Department of Transportation has bestowed a most unwelcome gift upon our beloved Michigan travelers: I-90/I-94 (Dan Ryan) reconstruction. In addition, the powers that be were kind enough to host a Web site offering a bevy of alternate routes to ease some of the pain:

www.danryanexpressway.com

Click here to view and print the map provided with our invitation which provides directions to the Pleasant Home and the Carleton Hotel, as well as indicating the stretch of freeway under construction.

If you're mapping your route online or setting your navigation system, the Pleasant Home is located at 217 Home Ave., Oak Park, IL 60302. The Carleton Hotel is located at 1110 Pleasant Street, Oak Park, IL 60302. Click here for more on the Pleasant Home and lodging at the Carleton.

While the trip from Detroit typically takes five hours, and two and a half from Kalamazoo, expect to add an additional hour or hour and a half to your commute on October 7. If you want to brave the Skyway, please do so at your own risk.

The Alternate Route from Michigan: (going around the city and construction)

  • I-94 West to I-294 North (there will be plenty of tolls, so have your change ready!)
  • Exit I-290 East
  • Exit Harlem Ave. Turn left. - The Pleasant Home (and the Carleton Hotel) will be approximately three miles ahead. You will turn right on Pleasant St. (just after Washington Blvd., but before Harlem and the train tracks overhead) and see the hotel and parking on the left.

If you're not staying the night, turn right on South Blvd. instead of Pleasant St. Turn right on Home Ave. The Pleasant Home is located on your right at 217 Home Ave.
